Every opinion here is a public-domain text of the Supreme Court of the United States, retrieved from the source identified in the provenance note at the foot of each case page and edited for teaching by Prof. Jorge R. Roig with pipeline assistance. Omissions are marked: bracketed ellipses […] for cuts within a paragraph, centered * * * for omitted paragraphs or sections. Most citations and footnotes are omitted without notation; retained footnotes keep their original numbering.
